Faith PC

The history of Faith Presbyterian Church begins in the early 1950’s when Mr.  & Mrs. H. Wallace built a one room building for Sunday school and occasional worship services.    The home Missions Committee purchased the site from the Wallace family and began services at 58th Avenue and Grant Street with the first service being held on September 24, 1952.   Rev. S. Christian preached the first sermon.

In March 1953, thirty-four people were organized into the West Hollywood Presbyterian Church.   The church suffered a great disaster on May 18, 1960 when the church was entered, robbed and set afire.   In July 1962 construction was then begun at a new site at 66 Avenue and Taft Street in Hollywood.   The building was part of a bank/shopping area. The first worship service was held on December 23, 1962.

In 1969 it was decided the church needed a “real” sanctuary for worship services and after extensive research into the potential growth in the area west of University Drive in southwest Broward County, a move was agreed upon by the congregation.  Since this move would mean leaving the West Hollywood area a change in the name was also desirable.   A feeling of “moving out in Faith” was felt by the members, thus the name Faith Presbyterian Church was born.

The first service in the new sanctuary located on Taft Street and 98 Avenue in Pembroke Pines was held on June 9, 1974.    Another “Step out in Faith” was taken in 1983 when a Fellowship Hall and Christian Education building was built and added to the existing structure.

Starting the Faith Child Development Center was approved on February 5, 1984. This preschool and after care program has grown to minister to 200 students a year in 2, 3, and 5 day programs.   The school’s reputation is such that we have no need of advertising as there is always a waiting list.

Today the Faith family consists of a widely diverse congregation representing many nations and all ages.  With an average attendance of 170, worship is exciting – the last Sunday of the month being a “blended” service and with excellent music provided each week by the dedicated choir or talented soloists.   Bible centered education is offered for all ages in weekly Sunday School, annual Vacation Bible School, and mid week adult studies.   Fellowship activities range from traditional pot lucks to theater outings to ball games, picnics, and even a “Faith Church Cruise” for the first time this year.    Faith Church is also a “tithing church” designating 10% of all undesignated receipts to mission projects both within and outside of our denomination.   The congregation just honored their pastor, Michel D. Yonts, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his ordination.

Faith Presbyterian Church looks forward to continuing its ministry to the Pembroke Pines/Miramar/Cooper City community in the friendly and welcoming manner that has become its trade mark among visitors and guests.   The congregation has been richly blessed with opportunities to serve and honor God.   The future promises even more worship, study, fellowship, and service in the coming years.
