Hurricane Assessments

There are 5 basic areas that we look at when doing a Church and facilities Hurricane Assessment.
Data Backup
- Off site company data storage
- Disc Data Backup
- It is recommended as a minimum that each church backup its computer data on two external discs, place into water tight containers and store in two different locations.
- All staff is encouraged to be released from work 24 to 48 hours before a predicted landfall.
Disaster Plan - It is recommended as a minimum that the Property Committee Chairman be in charge of mobilizing volunteers to get the Church ready before a hurricane makes landfall.
Roofs - It is recommended that all roofs have a yearly inspection, remove any debris or vegetation, and remove and replace any loose tiles or shingles. (Remember any loose tiles on a roof can become projectiles and damage other areas of your facilities)
Vegetation
- All large trees have regular hurricane cuts and are trimmed away from hanging over the buildings structure
- All vegetation to be trimmed as not to be touching the building structure
Windows and Doors
- At a minimum a few sheets of 5/8” CDX plywood and a few boxes of Tapcon screws should be stored on site
- You can also slowly start to make your own hurricane shutters if you can’t afford to have a company professionally install them.
- Take a sheet of 5/8” CDX plywood and cut to fit inside the exterior stucco jamb of your window.
- Take 4 exterior door slide bolts and install on the sides, one near each corner
- Drill 4 holes in the Stucco jamb to receive the bolts. Make sure that the bolts are secured firmly and are of large enough size
- Make a drawing of the building and number all the openings on the plan and shutters to correspond with each other
