Community Presbyterian Church is the oldest Christian mission in Clewiston dating back to 1926.  Back then the Church was only known as Community Church because all other denominations, including the Catholics met at the only place of worship until they acquired their own places.  We continue to be in fellowship with the Christian community and we are actively involved with the Ministerial Association of Clewiston and surrounding areas.

Today we still seek to be a Community Church, now by reflecting the rich diversity of a community that has demographically changed over the years.  When you come to Community Presbyterian Church in Clewiston you will find diversity, and what a joy it is to behold a people coming together from different racial, social and historical backgrounds to worship Christ our Lord and Savior who makes us one by his Spirit.  We admit and join Paul who said, “not that we have already…been made perfect, but we press on to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of us” (Philippians 2:12).

“To take hold of that for which Christ took hold of us” is exciting and costly.  The great paradox of the Gospel is that we gain when we lose and live when we die.  This great truth I had to experience as a pastor when the Lord “made me lie down” in a bed of illness.  I prayed:

Ps 6:1-3, 6, 9 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.  Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are in agony.  My soul is in deep anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?  I am worn out from my groaning.  All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.

The Lord has indeed heard my cry and accepted my prayer and as a result the congregation is witnessing a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit.  Christ is renewing Community Presbyterian Church.  It begins with repentance and a total surrender to live out the tenets of our Reformed tradition: grace alone, faith alone and scripture alone for the glory of God alone.

We will be better families and servants of Christ in the Church and in the community when “being” comes before “doing”.  This is what the Lord is doing in and through my life at Community Presbyterian Church.  It begins with pastors and Church leaders.  It is my desire that we may join David when he prayed: “create in us a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us…then, we will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will turn back to You” (Psalm 51:10, 13).

May the grace of Christ be with you, your families and ministries!
